I agree with others wholeheartedly that the move to the 3-speed design was a step in the wrong direction. We bought our first Vornado quite a few years ago, when the variable speed dial was available, and it's still going strong: quiet and powerful -- we love it. The first one was so good that we bought a second one; we were very disappointed in the 3-speed dial, and from the beginning, the fan just wasn't as effective as the first one. We should have returned it, but alas -- first it became noisy, and now the motor has died. Too bad -- this was once a fabulous product, but we either got a lemon the second time around or Vornado's quality control is failing...

Was happy to make an investment in this piece of engineering.

The fan is o.k. but only has a crummy 3 speed control. The critical flaw with the 783 fan is that it is inherently unstable. It is top heavy and crashes to the floor if it is only slightly bumped into. When it falls, the housing breaks. This is a defectively designed fan and should not have been released.

This was a good fan for about 2 years and then the motor bearings began to fail. One of mine has trouble starting because the bearings are freezing up. The other one rattles when the blades are spinning. Nobody makes anything that lasts anymore. Its a sad fact!

I have had many Vornado, variable speed, fans. I discovered the table top models intially and was wowed when I saw the Variable Speed Full Size model at the store. I have had my full size fan for 5 years and, although I love Vornado fans, like many other I have owned it is now malfunctioning. It speeds up and slows down on its own becoming loud and then quiet. This seems to be a common problem with the Vornado fan and I'd expect more for the additional money I pay for Vornado quality.

Still running after 9 yrs

I inherited a Vornado 9 yrs ago and it is still running strong. I just have to take it apart yearly to clean it but that is it. It has the variable speed control which I like. I ordered and received the stand Vornado and plan on getting another one before the summer heat sets in. They really move the air and I won't have any other brand.

Why no variable speed control?

I have been using these for years. Just had to replace the last one - it was used all up. I didn't look for anything else - this is the best air circulator out there, but the design has been changed to a 3-speed control rather than the variable. No good for me - the fan is either to low or too noisy.
I had to take it back - and won't be buying these again with the current speed control design.

The best piece of air circulation on the market

We own (4) different models (783) (630) (530) & the 270(v102).
Currently were waiting for our local store to carry the 660 so i can purchase it as well. I will not purchase any other fan as long as vornado is in business.

Bring back the variable speed control

I have bought 2 of these fans over the years. Very simply, no one builds a better fan, I think, than Vornado. I use one in a family room (without the full-height extension). The other moves between the master bedroom (its primary spot) and the living room or dining room in really nasty hot weather. Although this is a "whole room" circulator, the design makes it directional enough when you want to aim the air primarily at one area (like my face).
The only reservation I have about buying any more Vornado fans is the switch to 3-speed controls. I absolutely, positively prefer and want the variable-speed rheostat control. It might cost a little more, but I would happily pay the price.

The Best Vortex air flow

I am very pleased with my full sized Vornado it really moves the air throughout my home.I purchased this fan years ago and it still runs like the day i bought it. Easy to clean with the front grill that comes off. The Vornado fan i purchased has the variable speed control which i really like but would recommend and purchase the 3speed . Thanks to a company that still builds quality products.

I have 3 Vornado and I will be purchasing another in the very near future.These fans out perform any other fan in the market place ,bar none . They are very quite, very attractive ,reasonally price, and really move some air. I've had my big one for several years ,and the guard

what a circulator!

I puchased one of these about five years ago. We bought it to use in the Master bedroom. What a great choice. Vornado is much different than a typical fan. It cools and circulates throughout the entire room instead of just an area. We liked it so well we bought 2 more as gifts for the family and have talked friends into buying one also. I wouldn't own nothing else.

Before purchasing this fan probably six or eight years ago, I used to buy a new fan every three or four years. Each time I hoped my new purchase would be more satisfactory than the last one. The Vornado was perhaps three times the price of any of my previous purchases, but it is by far the best fan I've ever owned. It does a better job of circulating air, and it does its job quietly. Because it is on a stand, the fan does not take up space on a table top. Nor is it like a box fan which sits on the floor and stirs up dust. I like that my fan has a rheostat speed switch which gives me infinite control. The only drawback to this fan is that the screw which attaches the fan to the stand keeps working loose and must be tightened after even limited use. But overall, this is a great product.

I have this fan in my home office and it allowed me to not have to change the room around and add a window air conditioner. I keep it facing my desk and near the doorway. It drew in the cool air from the hallway and dispersed it throughout the room. Love It!

We have used this fan for 21+ years and has never failed. It has been dropped and knocked over time and time again and still works as well as it did out of the box. We have several Vornado products in our home as well as my families homes.

I got this upright air mover for a condo north of Boston. It's been great and is used year round but I have a few complaints, some of which have been resolved.
The unit can be knocked over and on ours the front face plate came loose. To vornado's credit they quickly shipped a new face plate.
Cleaning--this thing is very hard to clean. We keep a moderately clean home but the vornado gets packed with dust and muck if you use it in the kitchen at all. You can take off the face plate and fan blades but the rest of it is very hard to disassemble and clean. I wish they had designed that better as I would pay for the ability to clean the thing more easily. It's really an eye sore we hide from company at this point even though it still has great functionality and utility.

This product performed beyond our expectations.

This was our first summer in our 40' dome home. The previous owners had run 2 air conditioners all summer to keep the lower level cool. The upper level would be 10-15 degrees warmer in the heat of the afternoon.
Even though we had many days over a 100 degrees and high humidity, we only ran one air conditioner and our Vornado. There may have been 2-4 degree difference in the lower and upper levels on the hottest day. We would not have been as comfortable all summer without our quiet Vornado. We are so grateful for our unit. Never want to be without it.

We use this fan to circulate air from a cooler room in the house to the rest of the first floor. Even on medium speed, most of the first floor is significantly cooler than without it. The fan makes some noise on high, but that's to be expected with as much airflow as it produces. The great thing is this fan is very effective at low and medium speeds, and isn't nearly as loud.
